buy a flannel shirt

It is the beginning of Fall and everyone needs a flannel shirt.  They are so soft and comfy, warm when they need to be, can be worn with sleeves rolled up or down and buttoned.

Plaid flannel shirts are a wardrobe "go to" whether you are going camping, going to the grocery store or looking for a "grunge" look.

Yes, these are my Eddie Bauer boot cut jeans that I have worn in a previous post.   Here they are   CLICK

AND, yes, I'm still wearing sandals............it's still in the 80's.  I am not looking forward to having to put these bare feet in shoes!

Leave a couple of buttons undone at the neckline.  You could even wear a tank top underneath and leave the whole front unbuttoned.

I like to wear this one with shirt tail out and casual.  I love the slit at the sides.

So whether you are:

Thinking about bringing back the Hollywood starlet look....

Or becoming a lumberjack......

DID YOU KNOW:

Flannel fabric has been around since the 17th century. Flannel is a soft woven fabric that was originally made from carded wool and worsted yarn. In today’s machine driven world, it is now mostly constructed from wool, cotton, or synthetic fibers.  The shirts that I found for you are all cotton.

dress too short? cut it off!

Have you ever ordered something online and after receiving it realize that it just isn't going to work as you thought.
But you still like it!!
This can be perplexing.
I bought this dress.......yes, I said dress........from Just Fab but it was way tooooooo short for me to wear as a dress.  So I cut a few inches off the bottom and hemmed it and
BAM!!
The creation of a great shirt to wear with skinny jeans.

What do you think??

these short dresses would work the same:

My skinny jeans are from Chico's
I like the way they sit just barely below my natural waistline

Don't forget the skinny jean rules:
1.  If you have never tried them, and they come in your size, go for it!
2.  Be sure to wear longer, looser tops.

Reba skirt and shirt with a country flare

This flouncy tiered midi skirt is a wardrobe "must have" for the Fall Season.  It can be dressed up or down, worn with layered tops and sweaters or as I have chosen with this split v-neck soft cotton shirt.
The lined cotton skirt and 3/4 roll tab sleeve blouse are both from Reba Sahara Oasis and Desert Mirage collections.

The skirt has a knit waist band which means no extra bulky gathering at the waistline.

Here is the skirt at Dillards    CLICK

The Desert Mirage Gabrielle Blouse is a shade lighter than the skirt.  The lacy front is lined and has a few sparkles sewn in.  The back of the blouse is without lace and long enough to be cinched in at the waist with a belt.

Dillards has the blouse  CLICK

My boots are from a couple of years ago but I found some similar for you to look at.  I love the height of this stacked leather heel

Mine were purchased in Mexico, but I have given some suggestions for you:

Not only are western clothing styles extremely romantic, they are also a staple in today's fashion world.
Reba McEntire, country singer and actress, partnered with the Dillard's Department store chain to create a line of women's clothing simply called "Reba"  The collection emphasizes mix and match pieces ranging in price from $48 to  $289.

As to her personal style she says:

My personal style, I would describe as tough sexy,” Reba says. “I’m not a girly girl. I was born on a working cattle ranch. I was one of daddy’s hired hands, our room and board was our pay. I was just one of the boys, out working all the time.”

The perfect Jean

I continue my quest for the perfect fitting jean.
This may be it!
This pair is from Jones of New York and purchased at Dillards.
The fabric is cotton with a smidge of polyester and even smaller smidge of spandex.  I can't believe there is any spandex since they don't have that stretchy feel to them.  This five pocket straight leg jean has a regular rise.  The pant rise is important because it determines where your pants sit on your body, which in turn creates your perceived waistline. These sit about 1 inch from my natural waistline.  If you are under 5'8", they would sit close to your actual waistline.

The rise is perfect for me

I have had my blouse for quite some time.  It is a Classic ruffle front Ralph Lauren plaid.

Boots are from Just Fab

Just Fab is a great place for me to buy boots.  Where I live, the wearing of boots is a fashion statement.  It's not like we are going to wear them in the snow or for protection from the cold stormy weather or for traipsing along miles of gravel paths......   We just wear them because they are "cute"

Just Fab
has prices that allow me to buy several pairs.  I insert a gel sole to make them a little more comfortable.

History of Denim Pants

In 1872, Jacob Davis teamed with Levi Strauss to create a work pant made of true blue denim.  The big selling point was their strength.
1886

But it wasn't until 1918 that a denim tunic/trouser was designed for women.

1918

Our present day denim pants (Levi's) were first made in 1934.  They were made of blue denim and constructed in a similar manner to men's with the exception of a high "nipped in" waist.

time out to make a quilt

Making a Quilt Today

Taking a break from fashion today to make a quilt.  You see, I need a baby quilt for an upcoming baby shower.  I began with four coordinated scraps (about a half of a yard of each).  I chose one fabric to be more dominant than the others.  Then I cut them into various size strips and laid them out, switching them around until I had the sequence the way I wanted.

The dominant fabric can be found here...... CLICK  It also comes in cream. CLICK
This is the only place that I could find who still has some.  Once it is gone, there will be no more..... anywhere!
She also has some other LDS prints

I then stitched  the strips together and I have the quilt top finished.

Next, I laid down my backing fabric, wrong side up, sprayed it with a basting adhesive.

Then I laid out the batting, making sure that the fabric and batting were lying flat with no wrinkles.

After spraying the batting with the adhesive, I carefully laid on the quilt top, right side up, making sure all three layers were smooth and flat.
I use Warm and Natural cotton batting

Next, I machine stitched along the junction lines of the fabric pieces.  Using a walking foot attachment on your machine makes this easier.

After trimming all four sides, making the quilt the desired size, I added the binding edge.  It is made by cutting strips 3 1/4 inches wide and sewing together the strips to form a piece long enough to go all the way around the quilt., Then, folding it in half, I stitched it to the quilt back with a 3/8 in seam.  (raw edges of quilt and binding are together)

Next I turned the binding to the right side of the quilt and hand stitched it all the way around.  You could do this step by machine, if you so choose.

Finished quilt!!

I bought the blue LDS Follow Me fabric at a store in Cedar City Utah, but I found it here on Etsy to make it easier for you    CLICK  (she doesn't have too much left)
I also found similar prints here   CLICK

Words of Wisdom:  When you spend time making a gift, putting part of your soul into the work, it is only natural to want to be sure the person receiving it will cherish and take care of it............forever!

Once you give that gift away, you must let go of your ownership of it and not worry about whether it is appreciated or taken care of.  Your heart is in the work, but you have decided to give it away, so you must give away your hold on its future.

Exercising for the over 50's

.

I live in an "over 55" community.  I love doing so.  I try to walk 2 miles a day either in the morning or evening.  My friendly neighborhood makes it "fun" rather than a chore.

So here I am in my sweat pants and top, visor, sunglasses, iphone tucked in my bra with earbuds.  No motivational speeches or books on tape for me.   I'm listening to Pandora - 70's Lite Rock Radio.  The best music came from the 70's........... drug inspired, maybe......... but great lyrics!

Keeping active is a key to aging successfully. A regular routine of exercise not only burns fat but also supports your body and brain functions. Women over age 50 can look and feel years younger by performing exercises that burn calories, and tone and strengthen muscles and bones.

Not long ago I read an article (which I now cannot find) that said that after age 60, it is not a great idea to do one hour classes such as zoomba or aerobics and such.  If you have any kind of issues with any of your joints, one hour just beats them up even more.  Short spurts of exercise is the way to go.  Also, water aerobics is great and much easier on your joints.   Anyway, I liked the article.......wish I could find it again............ but it's the philosophy that I have adopted.

I have been looking for a workout to recommend.  Needless to say, I have lost five pounds trying to find a good one.  My favorite two are:

#1    iTunes 7 minute workout app  Wahoo fitness     https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/7-minute-workout-free-daily/id650762525?mt=8  (get this one from the app store and it is free)

I have this workout on my phone and Siri leads me in 12 exercises in 7 minutes  (it is actually more like 10 minutes)  If you do them correctly, it is a full body workout and the "sweat" proves it.

#2     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TG8wyDnWELM  Coach Kosak takes you through 15 minutes of exercise.  It is kind of cool........CLICK here:..just one guy in a room with a chair.

My walking attire:

I am wearing New Balance shoes.  (these are a newer model than what I am wearing)  CLICK  I always buy this brand because they run narrow.  And, yes, I put Gel insoles in them.

Light weight extra soft and comfy sweat top is from Target!  Not too heavy, but plenty warm if layered with a t-shirt underneath.  Love the way it fits and the price was right.

Sleeves are a good length  (I have long arms)

Little "hoodie"

Get one for yourself before they are all gone.  CLICK

Remember:

It doesn't matter how fast or how many reps you do...............you're still ahead of the guy on the couch!

New Fall color................

A new Fall color

Shopping at Chico's I found this wonderful new Fall color.  It is called Brevity Brown in their store, but by other names in other brands.  This pair of pants will be a great addition to my Fall wardrobe.
The trouser-style pant flows from one look to the next in a soft and draping fabric that stretches with flawless comfort.
  • Trouser styling with a relaxed fit and wide-leg silhouette.
Pants:  Click

Self tie belt.........

This pant is reminiscent of this 1940 pant.
Another example of fashion repeating itself.

This Fall color  is easy to mix with an animal print.  This bold cheetah-print cardigan is right in its element, with a super soft fabric and classic one button-up styling.

Jacket:  Click

I have completed the ensemble with a super soft, long-sleeve tee in a a solid knit and face framing scoop neckline.

Top:   Click    (color: Arabian Camel)

Remember in a previous post,  I reviewed the rules for wearing animal prints and mixing animal prints.  Watch this short entertaining video by Adam Glassman.  He says it all in less than three minutes.

Bring back the 70's

It's just a little windy at the park today, but I wanted to show you my great find at Nordstrom Rack.

The long sleeves with the gathered mid-sleeve accent is very reminiscent of the 70's
The pin-tuck pleats in front are right from the pages of 70's fashion.
The high/low peplum hem sways in the wind.

The split neck and tie are so fun and the 100% polyester fabric feels like silk.

Fashion styles repeat themselves.  There are only so many silhouettes, and sleeves, collars, pant legs, etc.  When fashion repeats, it comes back with a new twist on the original style.
The 70's was a time of free flowing fabrics and designs with tie necklines, big sleeves and "swooshie" hemlines.

I fell in love with the sleeves ....... such wonderful fashion memories of the past...........
You, too, can relive those days of freedom with a.....
